Wine 🍷 country might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of a family retreat but Sonoma in California is fun for all ages. We loved @fairmontsonoma with our kids:
1. Rooms were spacious and almost every room had some kind of patio or balcony which is great after everyone is asleep
2. The restaurants were wonderful and Kids under 3 ate for free - always crayons and coloring too
3. The grounds of the hotel had all kinds of fun activities, pools, big games, smores every night
4. Walking distance to downtown Sonoma which has great restaurants and shops
5. Super close to vineyards which are welcoming to families - a few have cute tours you can take around the farm and the kids learned how wine is made- parents got to taste the goods

They are stunning resorts that are way less busy and less expensive than the season- plus you’re in the gorgeous mountains- we took my rowdy boys out to @ritzcarltonlaketahoe which was a dream

ROAD TRIP: the countryside of Italy isn’t only for wine tasting adults.

-We stayed in Panicale at @rastrello.panicale as our home base.

-Spend a day visiting Lake Trasimeno and the adorable town of Castiglione del Lago

-Spend a day truffle hunting- the kids loved hanging out with the dogs and we ate a great meal with the truffles we found!

-Take a big day to travel to Florence which is about 2 hours from Panicale so we stopped in Sienna on the way there which has no cars in the main piazza, so much charm and amazing food

-Drove to Florence at nap time and then spent the entire afternoon exploring the city. We drove back to Panicale after dinner and transferred the kids to their beds at the hotel asleep

The Hudson Valley in New York is an endless amount of easy fun for young families- we stayed at @wildflowerauberge and loved everything about it!

1. Hiking, hiking and more hiking - so many family friendly hikes and swimming holes - we live in a city and our kids love the animals and fresh air
2. In Phoenicia you must do the rail trail - it books up very far in advance so it isn’t something you can plan same day
3. @wildflowerauberge has the most amazing farm to table food- every meal was Michelin star in our book
4. Make sure you go to visit @howecaverns which is a natural under ground cavern system with a boat - if you are very adventurous you can also hike further down into the caverns with a guide
5. @phoeniciadiner is always a requirement
6. We love @arrowoodfarms which is a brewery with great food, live music on the weekend and farm animals
7. If you drive west in the valley, rafting on the Delaware river is an absolute blast and super easy rapids for the kids

1. Pizza, pasta, gelato, repeat- even if your kids are picky eaters you will have a breeze feeding them in Italy. We had to ban pizza and pasta for 2 weeks upon return
2. The city is pretty stroller friendly and there are a million park and pedestrian only zones to run free and explore

Travel hack- go to ski destinations in the summer! You can stay at unbelievable hotels for a fraction of the price and the hiking and outdoor sports are out of this world.

Last summer we went out to Lake Tahoe and stayed at the Ritz Carlton which was like a dream. We flew in and out of San Francisco which is about a 3 hour drive to Tahoe. We stopped in Sonoma for a few days on the way back to SF.

Travel hack- go to ski destinations in the summer! You can stay at unbelievable hotels for a fraction of the price and the hiking and outdoor sports are out of this world.

Last summer we went out to Lake Tahoe and stayed at the Ritz Carlton which was like a dream. We flew in and out of San Francisco which is about a 3 hour drive to Tahoe. We stopped in Sonoma for a few days on the way back to SF.

The first big trip we ever took after kids was to Cartagena, Colombia. It could not have been a better choice because Colombian people are so warm and friendly we had an amazing time and felt so welcomed every step of the way.

Yes! Tips:
1. Make sure you stay in the old city because everything is walkable. We stayed at the @sofitellegendsantaclaractg and were beyond impressed with the property
2. There are no real beaches in Cartagena. You must take a small boat to an island off the coast. Make sure you use a reputable company because some kind be a little sketchy
3. Latin people are so warm and welcoming to children, it was incredible

When my oldest was 8 months old, I took a flight from NY to LA by myself with her. I was so excited because I got upgraded to business- when I got to my seat, the man next to me gave me the most gigantic eye roll and said to me “well this will be awful” - how dare I have a baby in business! My daughter slept peacefully in the lay down seat with me without making a sound while the guy in front of us got so drunk and rowdy he was escorted off the plane after landing by security.

I met my husband young and together we went on some crazy adventures around the globe and that’s what made us fall in love. When we started thinking about kids everyone scared us - “it’s a waste to travel with them”, “it isn’t a vacation with kids”, “kids aren’t welcome in the good places”….

The more we let people make us feel children don’t belong, the more we feel our children cage us in. The more my children see the world and see new places, new ways of life, the more I expose them to trips and experiences that aren’t the typical family vacation, the easier it gets.

Don’t stop experiencing everything you want in life just because you have kids. Your children find everything to be an adventure when it’s with you, the bus, the plane, the boat, the walk on a cobblestone street. Take your kids on the trip you want - here’s my tips to see it all, in style - bon voyage! 🛫
